To sustain its very impressive growth in providing domestic solar power across East Africa, M-KOPA needs its senior management to be at the top of their game. To meet that need, AMI designed a one-year blended learning programme with five one-day learning labs, twelve online courses that run in the quarters between learning labs, and three action learning projects in which teams learn by tackling key problems identified by top management.
The third of five learning labs took place on 1 April. It was split between practice in performance management, drawing on situations participants had encountered during the previous quarter, and presentations by the action learning teams. Addressing the three teams afterwards, CEO Jesse Moore commended them on their work and approved the implementation of all three projects. The teams will learn about change management and project management as they implement the projects in the next six months, with the support of AMI coaches.
A feature of the M-KOPA Senior Leadership Programme is the interplay between content from the courses, practice in the learning labs, and application at work. Commented Jonathan Cook, lead facilitator, “Participants have commented that what makes the online learning work is doing the activities that are attached to each lesson. We believe strongly that learning comes from doing and interacting with peers. The proof of effective management learning has to be in improved performance.” All participants work with “accountability partners” to ensure that the new practices they learn are embedded.
